Intro to Race for kids ages 6-12
I am a teacher, an activist, and a non-binary person of color. This was one of the ways I used my experience working with children and my BA in Social Justice to contribute to racial justice. This project is free for educational use with proper citation/credit so that cost is not a barrier to learning.
Nevertheless, my time and energy are valuable. I hope to continue producing free anti-racist educational materials, but I need your help to sustain this effort. In exchange for the labor I put into this resource, I ask you to commit to sharing this resource widely and supporting my work financially as you are able.
I created this month-long set of stories and activities following the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. Several parents said that they had no idea how to talk to their kids about what had happened, and so they simply didn't.
The ability to avoid talking about race and racism is a huge privilege, and one I encourage families to inspect. I know these conversations are daunting, and I hope that these stories and activities help families begin the long-overdue learning about race and racism.
For a guide to setting up parent accountability groups, grounded in Unitarian Universalism but adaptable to any or no faith tradition, visit UU at Home.
For an incomplete list of awesome children's books on race, see this list; for children's books on social justice more broadly see this list.
